Vic Giuliani scores 28, Trojans wallop Broncos

CRYSTAL FALLS — After suffering its first loss of the season last week, the Forest Park boys basketball team is back on track.

On Monday, the Trojans (9-1, 0-0) continued their dominance against Bark River-Harris (3-8, 0-2), picking up a 77-39 win in Crystal Falls.

Forest Park jumped on the Broncos immediately in the first quarter and built a 21-4 advantage through eight minutes.

Bark River-Harris found a rhythm on offense in the second quarter, scoring 16 points. However, it couldn’t slow down the Trojans, who scored 18 points in the frame. The Broncos trailed 39-20 at halftime.

Although Bark River-Harris had success before halftime, that ended in the third quarter. Forest Park scored 29 points in the frame while holding the Broncos to eight points.

Trojans junior Vic Giuliani led all scorers in the contest with 28 points. He also recorded two rebounds, an assist and three steals.

Forest Park also received contributions from Noah Starr (2 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist), Dietrich Rasner (2 points, 2 steals), Gabe Quevedo (6 points, 10 assists, 3 rebounds, 6 steals), Trent Kannich (2 points, 1 rebound, 1 assist), Dax Huuki (2 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal), Matthew Showers (10 points, 7 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal), Aiden Waldo (12 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals), Eli Brzonowski (2 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist) and Kevin Giuliani (11 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 block).

KNIGHTS 53, NORDICS 50

FELCH TOWNSHIP — With both teams entering the contest ranked No. 4 in the latest Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association U.P. Poll, fans in Felch Township were in for a battle as the Norway (8-3, 1-1) and North Dickinson boys varsity basketball teams (9-3, 2-0) faced off on Monday.

That’s exactly what they got as the Knights snapped the Nordics’ five-game win streak with a 53-50 win.

“We had a solid first half,” Norway head coach Jeff Gallino said. “AJ (Gallino) shot the ball well. We caused some disruptions on defense and were able to hang on in the end for the win. (It was a) good team win.”

North Dickinson sophomore Trenton Kramer led the way in the first quarter with six points. However, the Knights took an 11-9 lead into the second.

Norway caught fire in the frame, with AJ Gallino scoring eight points and Anthony Pineda adding seven. Spencer Kramer scored seven for the Nordics, but they went into halftime trailing 33-25.

“Norway came out and played with a little more urgency,” North Dickinson head coach Chris Mattson said. “They got to more loose balls. In my opinion, they hustled a little bit more than we did. Give them credit for coming up with the big win. We made it interesting at the end, but the game probably pivoted in that second quarter.”

After halftime, both teams tightened up on defense. The Knights tallied 13 points in the third quarter, while North Dickinson scored 11.

The Nordics’ defense stifled Norway in the fourth, holding them to seven points. They scored 14 in the frame but it wasn’t enough to pick up the win.

AJ Gallino led all scorers in the contest with 20 points.

The Knights also received contributions from Bryce Adams (6 points), Cole Baij (10 points), Anthony Pineda (11 points), Mason Trudeau (4 points) and Ellitt Kraemer (2 points).

North Dickinson received contributions from Ty King (8 points, 12 rebounds), Trenton Kramer (16 points), Brady Jungwirth (2 points), Mason Anderson (6 points) and Spencer Kramer (18 points).

Norway heads to Florence, Wis., on Thursday to face the Bobcats while the Nordics are off until Tuesday when the Trojans come to town.

BADGERS 58, WOLVERINES 53

CRIVITZ, Wis. — With sole possession of first place in the Marinette & Oconto Conference on the line, the Niagara boys varsity basketball team went to Crivitz, Wis., on Monday.

The Badgers (8-2, 6-0) didn’t let the pressure get to them as they toppled Crivitz (7-5, 5-1), 58-53.

“(It was a) total team effort,” Niagara head coach Terry Youren said. “We worked hard on defense, which was the difference in the game.”

Defense was the name of the game in the first half for the Badgers. They held the Wolverines to 21 points in the frame.

With Crivitz struggling to score, Niagara established a balanced scoring attack. Senior Tommy Martin led the way in the first with nine points. Gavin Neuens and Cameron Schiefelbein each pitched in seven points and Dante Stachowicz added six. It led 33-21 at the break.

The Wolverines found their footing in the second half, scoring 32 points. However, the Badgers held on for the 58-53 win.

Schiefelbein led Niagara with 15 points.
