RHINELANDER, Wis. — Senior Jaxon Buckley scored a pair of goals while Kingsford held a commanding 50-19 advantage in shots and cruised to a 4-0 non-conference varsity hockey victory Thursday evening at the Rhinelander Ice Arena.

“It was great to get 50 shots, we had lots of opportunities,” Flivvers head coach Greg Wadge said. “I’m very happy with the win.”

Buckley, with his fourth multi-goal game of the season, scored the first and final tallies for Kingsford in a contest in which the faster Flivvers easily controlled possession and the outcome was never really in doubt. His first came at 10:41 of the first, and he buried his second at 14:03 of the second period.

Senior captain Gavin Moore and senior Evan Moyer also scored in the Flivvers’ three-goal second period, and Kingsford clanked at least another five or six shots off the pipes in the win.

Moore connected for his team-leading 18th goal of the season.

Moyer’s marker was his seventh of the campaign.

Junior Will Murvich added two assists, and sophomore Jonah Doenier also had a helper for the Kingsford, which improved to 10-12-1.

Freshman goalie Alex Hemgren earned his second shutout of the season, even though he didn’t exactly face an onslaught. But when tested, he was able to deny the Hodags each time. He was also credited an assist on Moore’s coast-to-coast score.

“It was a good effort by him for sure,” Wadge said of Hemgren.

The Flivvers’ regular season is quickly wrapping up, as Kingsford heads to Manistique on Tuesday and then concludes with a home game against Calumet on Thursday.

The Flivvers are facing the Emeralds for a third time, having defeated them twice at home already, 5-2 on Dec. 30 and 4-1 on Jan. 27. If the Flivvers were able to win their final two, it would mark their first .500 or better regular season in six years.

MHSAA regional play begins the week of Feb. 17, with pairings to be announced soon.

Starting at $2.99/week.
