FELCH TOWNSHIP — After dropping its last game of the regular season and having to wait nine days between games, the North Dickinson girls varsity basketball team locked in on Thursday as it welcomed Stephenson to the Carl F. Lemin Gymnasium for an MHSAA Division 4 District 99 semifinal matchup.

The Nordics (15-6, 7-1) overwhelmed the Eagles (16-8, 4-4) behind a 24-point performance for Ava Oman to advance to the district final against Norway.

“We got off to a nice, fast start,” North Dickinson head coach Kirk Mattson said. “Our kids were ready to go. Ava Oman came out on fire. She hit some threes for us and we were moving the ball. That was huge for us.”

The Nordics opened up with five 3-pointers in the first quarter. Oman made two of them en rout to a 13-point frame. They held Stephenson to 12 points and took an 18-point advantage into the second.

Although Mattson wasn’t planning on a dominant performance from long range, he was happy to see his team moving the ball.

“Our game plan was to play tough man-to-man defense, get some turnovers and get into the open court,” Mattson said. “It just turned out that was probably the best we’ve moved the ball in a half-court set all year. We got some nice looks and we knocked them down.”

Oman kept cooking in the second, knocking down two more 3-pointers. Freshman Alyson Steinbrecher added another three and freshman Lauren Jungwirth pitched in four points.

The Eagles won the quarter by five points, but they went into halftime trailing 43-29.

Both teams struggled in the third quarter.

North Dickinson scored seven points in eight minutes while Stephenson tallied 10. Oman led the Nordics with five in the frame.

North Dickinson bounced back with 13 points in the fourth quarter.

It held the Eagles to eight and picked up the win.

Oman’s 24 points led all scorers in the contest.

The Nordics also received contributions from Steinbrecher (15 points), Jungwirth (16 points), Aspen Anderson (5 points) and Aunika Lindholm (3 points).
