ESCANABA — In another tight battle between Great Northern Conference baseball rivals, Escanaba rallied from a 3-0 deficit and edged Kingsford 4-3 Tuesday evening at Al Ness Field.

The Flivvers walked off with a 4-3 victory in the teams’ only other meeting this season, back in late April.

“Escanaba has a great team,” Flivvers head coach Joe Kriegl said. “We’re going to see them again in the districts. We’ll let this one soak in and use it as fuel and hopefully come back and do something in the playoffs.”

The Flivvers built a 3-0 lead with a run in the first and two more in the third, thanks to a two-out, two-run double by senior Andres Finley, but it wasn’t enough. A key error in the fourth helped the Eskymos plate a pair and they took the lead in the fifth with back to back two-out doubles.

“They hit the ball more than we did,” Kriegl said. “I thought we played a pretty decent game, but obviously killed ourselves by not getting a couple of outs we needed to get. And you can’t do that against good teams because they’ll make you pay.”

The Flivvers’ offense couldn’t find much green after the third inning. Despite making plenty of contact, Kingsford only recorded two more hits, often hitting the ball right at the Escanaba defense. The Flivvers went down in order in both the fifth and sixth innings. Senior Nolan Hendrickson reached on an infield single with one down in the seventh, but was left stranded.

Mikaiden Hughes drove in the tying run in the fifth with a double and scored the go-ahead run when Nolan Bink followed with another double.

Escanaba junior pitcher Ashton Rymkos went the distance for the win, allowing four hits while striking out six and walking two.

Finley started for Kingsford, leaving after the first batter in the fifth inning. Brown came on in relief. They combined to allow 10 hits with four strikeouts and no walks.

The Flivvers (9-8, 6-1 GNC) still control their own destiny for the outright league title and can clinch with a win over Menominee in the final conference game on the schedule at home Wednesday. Next up for the Flivvers is a home game against Houghton this afternoon.

Starting at $3.50/week.
