Knights’ pitching dominates; Niagara stings Hornets

Norway pitchers Kendall Burklund and Kara Stanchina each threw a complete game and combined for 25 strikeouts as the Knights swept visiting North Dickinson in a Skyline Central Conference doubleheader Monday.

In the first game, Burklund allowed just one hit in the circle and smashed a home run at the plate to help lead the Knights to an 8-3 victory. Lilly Tomlanovich went 3 for 4 with three RBIs, Aidan Fisher went 3 for 3 with a double and an RBI and Jordyn Moln and Emma Dube added a run driven in each.

Burklund threw all seven innings with three earned runs allowed. She walked seven and fanned 14.

In the finale, Stanchina held the Nordics to five hits over seven innings in Norway’s 9-1 triumph. Stanchina walked three and struck out 11. She also drove home two runs.

Tomlanovich continued to rip the ball in the nightcap, finishing with two triples and a double with two RBIs. Fisher contributed a triple and an RBI, Moln recorded a double and Myah Gilroy and Kaylee Baldwin knocked each drove home a run.

NIAGARA, Wis. — Shelby Zittlow ripped a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 3-all tie and help send the Lady Badgers to a 6-3 victory over visiting Gillett-Suring in a Marinette & Oconto Conference game on Monday.

“(She) does a great job putting the bat on the ball,” Niagara coach Joe Champeau said of Zittlow. “I had her come into the game as a pinch hitter in the sixth inning and she delivered. She always delivers big hits at crucial moments.”

Niagara scored a run in the bottom of the first but the Hornets scored twice in the top of the third to go in front.

The Lady Badgers answered with two in the fourth to take a 3-2 lead, but the visitors answered with a run in the top of the fifth to tie the contest.

Grace Payette recorded two hits for the winners, while Paige Guardiola doubled and drove in a run. Zowie Loukus and Bristol Sanicki added an RBI each.

“We didn’t have a lot of hits throughout the game, but came up with hits at crucial times to generate runs,” Champeau said.

The Lady Badgers finished with six hits in the contest.

Elesia Sweig started for Niagara and pitched five innings. She allowed six hits and three earned runs while fanning six. Guardiola came on in relief in the sixth and finished the game. She surrendered one hit and one walk with four strikeouts.

“Every girl on this team gave 100 percent effort and it showed on the field tonight,” Champeau said.

KINGSFORD — Gladstone pitcher Tia Schone pitched a no-hitter and struck out 16 Flivver hitters as the Braves kicked off their doubleheader sweep of Kingsford with a 6-0 win in the opening game.

Kingsford sophomore Mya Brunswick held her team in the game through five innings, allowing just a single run in the top of the first and another in the third. In all, the Flivvers’ ace pitched all seven innings, allowing four earned runs and 13 hits while fanning six and walking just one.

In the finale, Gladstone recorded 14 hits and scored 19 times in their lopsided victory.

Jazz Shaughnessy, Karly Trevillian and Anna Bortolini drove in a run each for the Flivvers. Trevillian, Addy Kriegl, Grace Rice, Jenna Viau and Kailey Sundquist recorded a hit each.
