Solberg’s earns title in Minors Little League

IRON MOUNTAIN — Solberg’s Greenleaf of Iron Mountain captured the local Little League championship in the Minors (ages 8-10) Division with a 9-6 win over Kingsford Midwest Snow & Lawn Care.

The title was decided Wednesday at East Barkle Field in Iron Mountain.

During the regular season, Solberg’s compiled a 9-4-1 record. The Iron Mountain squad entered the postseason tournament as a No. 5 seed in the 15-team league.

Solberg’s advanced to the championship with wins against Pembine Borderhounds/Pembine Lawn & Sport, Niagara Stec Construction and top-seeded Kingsford Stephens Real Estate.

Midwest Snow & Lawn, 13-1 during the regular season, was the No. 2 seed and advanced with wins over Crystal Falls CoVantage, Kingsford FNB and Norway Northern Interstate Bank.

Little League action for the Minors age group continues with the District 10 All-Star tournament hosted by Kingsford Little League. It gets underway Saturday, July 12, at Quinnesec Park.

The seven-team field vying for a berth in the state tournament consists of Kingsford, Iron Mountain, Norway, Iron County, Gladstone, Escanaba and Trenary-based Tri County. The championship game is slated for 5:30 p.m. Thursday, July 17. If the team advancing through the loser’s braket wins the Thursday game, a final championship game will be played at 5:30 p.m. Friday, July 18.

The state tournament in the Minors Division will be hosted by Tecumseh Little League starting Saturday, July 26.
