Big Shooters are ‘golden’ at 4-H shoot in Shawano

SAGOLA — Seven members of the Big Shooters Club representing Florence County, Wis., participated in the Shawano Gun Club’s 4-H All-Star Summer Shootout, earning 19 gold medals.

The club earned the top position in every category entered.The total count at the Wisconsin shoot was 19 gold, seven silver and four bronze.

The only Big Shooter in the Junior (ages 9-11) class was Jonas “The Golden Boy” Eloranta — the only member to participate in archery. Eloranta earned gold in both archery animal release and teamed with his father to win the youth/adult category. Another first came in the wildlife recognition event.

His other two gold medals were in air rifle and air pistol. This is Eloranta’s second year in a row earning five first-place finishes in all five categories entered. Next year he’ll move up to the Intermediate (ages 12-14) group.

Willow Glasheen also took first place in all five categories entered at the July 12-13 event in Shawano. She earned Intermediate top honors in air pistol, .22 pistol, .22 sporter rifle, .22 scoped silhouette rifle, and .22 iron sight silhouette rifle.

The Senior (ages 15-19) division had five shooters from the Big Shooters Club. In the air pistol category, it was Bo Glasheen getting top honors. He also took home the gold medal in air rifle.

In .22 pistol, it was Alexander Erickson in first place with Vandan Pezzullo in second. The .22 sporter rifle event had all three top finishers from the Big Shooters Club. Pezzullo took first followed by Reed DeGroot and Club President Kyra Clement in third.

In .22 silhouette scoped, it was also the top three from Big Shooters. Erickson placed first, followed by Pezzullo and Glasheen. In the .22 silhouette iron sight category it was DeGroot in first with Glasheen in third.

The shotgun trap category was also dominated by the Big Shooters. Erickson earned first followed by Glasheen and DeGroot.

In the shotgun hunt and cover category it was the team of Erickson and DeGroot narrowly edging the team of Pezzullo and Glasheen for the top spot. DeGroot scored the most points in the wildlife recognition category.

In the overall medal count, Willow Glasheen and Eloranta each earned five gold medals.

Erickson took home four golds while DeGroot earned three golds, a silver and a bronze. Bo Glasheen took home a gold, three silvers, and two bronze. Pezzullo captured a gold and three silvers. Clement rounded out the medal count with a bronze.

The club meets at the Sagola Township Sportsmen’s Club in Channing on the first Sunday of every month at 1 p.m.

Club membership is open to youth of all ages. Members are taught firearms safety, use and competition. They participate in archery, air rifle, air pistol, .22 pistol, .22 rifle, shotgun, BB gun and muzzleloading.
