Kingsford Minors head to state tourney

QUINNESEC — Kingsford’s 10-4 win over Norway on Friday will send the Minors (ages 8-10) Little League baseball All-Stars to Tecumseh this weekend for the state tournament.
The squad leaves Thursday with opening ceremonies at 6 p.m. Eastern time Friday and games starting Saturday. There is a 16-team field. After qualifying games Saturday, Sunday and Monday, eight teams advance into a single-elimination showdown.
Kingsford rallied from a 4-3 deficit at Quinnesec Park on Friday, taking a 6-4 lead in the bottom of the third inning and quieting Norway’s bats the rest of the way.
Harvey Ellis pitched 3 2/3 innings for Kingsford, allowing five hits and four runs. He struck out five and walked two. Harrison Yonke sealed the win, pitching 2 1/3 scoreless innings. He gave up two hits, fanned five and walked one.
Kingsford piled up 13 hits as Liam Wodenka provided pop in the middle of the lineup, delivering two hits and driving in two runs. Reid McLain went 3-for-3 at the plate. Larkin Gordon and Lincoln Peterson also collected multiple hits and Jacob Zawada stole two bases.

Bryer Wolsker, with two RBIs, and Rori Anderson, with two hits, led Norway’s offense. Crew Griese drove in a run with a single.
Norway reached the District 10 championship contest with a 9-5 win over Iron Mountain in the loser’s bracket. Kingsford came into the final undefeated after an 8-0 win over Iron Mountain.
Gladstone, Escanaba and Iron County were also in the six-team field in the double-elimination tournament.
