NORWAY — Kingsford’s Midwest Snow and Lawn Care defeated Norway’s Okler Roofing 12-4 on Wednesday at Marion Park to capture the Starter Softball (ages 7-8) championship in the area’s 11-team league.
Midwest finished the regular season at 9-1, with its only loss coming against Okler Roofing. The Kingsford squad advanced to the tournament championship with wins over North Central Lumberjack Hardwoods and North Dickinson Anderson’s Grocery Store, and then avenged its only season loss.
It was a pitcher’s duel for the first three innings Wednesday as Midwest’s Thea Zawada and Okler’s London Polfus allowed just three hits and struck out nine each.
Midwest flipped the game in the top of the fourth, scoring six runs to take a 6-1 lead. The biggest blow was a triple by Zawada that drove in two runs.
Midwest then scored five runs in the top of the sixth inning as Zawada and Ellery Olson tripled, Claire DeRidder and Lucy Wodenka doubled, and Gabi VanDusen singled.
Wodenka, Zawada and Vera Fish collected three hits each for Kingsford. Izzy Webster, Kylie DeMars and VanDusen delivered multiple hits as well. Wynn Gordon and Addy Miller both got the bat on the ball, but with some fielder’s choices did not advance on bases.
There were solid plays made in the field to get the outs at first base by both teams, the coaches said.
