MILWAUKEE (AP) — Right-hander Erick Fedde joined his third organization this season when he signed with the Milwaukee Brewers, who also placed All-Star closer Trevor Megill on the 15-day injured list on Wednesday with a right flexor strain.
Fedde was activated in time to be available for the Brewers’ home game against Arizona. Fedde signed with the NL Central leaders three days after he was released by the Atlanta Braves.
The 32-year-old Fedde was 1-2 with an 8.10 ERA in five games with Atlanta after going 3-10 with a 5.22 ERA in 20 starts with the St. Louis Cardinals, who designated him for assignment last month.
The Brewers need healthy arms to eat innings in the midst of an 18-day stretch in which they’re playing 19 games.
Megill, 31, is 5-3 with a 2.54 ERA and 30 saves in 44 appearances while striking out 58 batters over 46 innings. He has blown three of his last four save opportunities.
The Brewers also transferred right-hander Logan Henderson to the 60-day injured list.
Isaac Collins hit a bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the ninth inning Tuesday to bring home the winning run, and the Brewers recovered after blowing a six-run lead to beat Arizona 9-8.
William Contreras and Brice Turang hit two-run homers for Milwaukee. Gabriel Moreno had a three-run shot for Arizona off Jacob Misiorowski.
Athletics 7,
Tigers 6
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Darell Hernaiz walked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th inning, and the Athletics beat Detroit 7-6. Jacob Wilson homered and had a career-high four RBIs,
Detroit’s Riley Greene hit a grand slam to center field in the third. After the Tigers took a 6-5 lead in the top of the 10th, Will Vest (6-3) started the bottom of the inning and gave up two runs — one earned — on a hit and three walks, his sixth blown save in 25 opportunities this season.
Giants 5,
Cubs 2
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Justin Verlander finally won at home for the first time since joining the Giants, backed by Matt Chapman’s sixth-inning home run and an earlier drive by Wilmer Flores, and San Francisco beat the Chicago Cubs 5-2 on Tuesday night.
Verlander (2-10) allowed two runs on seven hits, struck out five and walked two over six innings. He had been 0-6 at home this season, and the Giants had gone 3-9 in his previous 12 outings at Oracle Park since he signed a $15 million, one-year contract in January.
