Busy Wykons earn tennis split

IRON RIVER — For the second day in a row, the West Iron County girls tennis team was faced with playing a doubleheader on Friday, including a match against one of the premier tennis programs in the Upper Peninsula.

The Wykons were tasked with a match against U.P. Division 1 runner-up Westwood as well as Munising Friday and left the Nelson Field tennis courts with a split, shutting down the Mustangs 8-0 and falling to the Patriots 7-1.

In their victory, the Wykons captured 12 of the 13 sets in the six matches played. No. 1 singles Grace Smith and No. 3 singles Erin Kolbas led the charge with a 6-0, 6-0 wins. No. 4 singles Taylor Economy dropped just one game in her victory as did No. 1 doubles Destiny Lemery and Aubrey Richardson and No. 2 doubles Olivia Lamay and Julia White.

At No. 2 singles, Kaycee Ingram came back from a set down to edge Kinley Hall 4-6, 6-2, 10-4.

West Iron won the No. 3 and No.4 doubles matched by forfeit.

No. 4 doubles Rochelle Bear and Madison Cronkright notched West Iron’s lone victory against the Patriots, defeating Taylor Keranen and Samiah LaFreniere 7-5, 6-4.
