Flivvers start strong with 2 soccer wins in Soo

SAULT STE. MARIE — Coming off a memorable season that saw them claim a district championship trophy and advance to the MHSAA Division 3 regional final, the Kingsford Flivvers opened their 2025 slate with a pair of victories Saturday at the Sault Ste. Marie Invitational.

The Flivvers began the day with a 3-1 decision over Grayling and then finished with a 3-0 triumph over the host Blue Devils. The second match ended early in the second half because of inclement weather.

In the first match, junior Jett Buckley opened the scoring nine minutes in with a goal off an assist by junior Jonah Nelson. Five minutes later, Buckley was fouled inside the box and knocked in the penalty kick to make the count 2-0.

With six minutes to play before halftime, senior Will Murvich found the back of the net from around the 18-yard box to put Kingsford up by three at the break.

Nelson kick-started the Flivvers in the second match with a goal off an assist from Gavin Kinsella eight minutes in. Nelson then assisted on Buckley’s third goal of the day to increase Kingsford’s lead to 2-0 at the 13-minute mark.

Buckley then closed the scoring with his fourth, 16 minutes before halftime.

“There’s several players on the team who are playing in new or expanded roles this year, so we were eager to see how they looked together in a game situation,” Kingsford’s first-year varsity coach Zach Celello. “We were thrilled with the way they played and are excited to see what they can achieve together this season.”

Starting at $3.50/week.
