Knights shut down IM tennis

KINGSFORD — The Norway Knights girls tennis team continued its fine start Monday with an 8-0 defeat of Iron Mountain in a match played at Kingsford High School.

The Knights captured all 16 sets played. In singles, Jordyn Moln knocked off Alysia Wood 6-1, 6-4 at No. 1 singles, Ella Wojtowicz defeated Avea Brown 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles, Tori Trudeau upended Jacalyn Rowe 6-2, 6-2 at three singles and Jessa Rossler recorded a 6-2, 6-1 win over Grace Webb at No. 4 singles.

The No. 1 and No. 3 doubles matches were the most competitive contests of the day. At No. 1, Kara Stanchina and Lyla Tomlanovich fought through a tough first set to knock off Ella Theisen and Lindsey Lewandowski 7-6, 6-3, while Myah Gilroy and Emily Carlson outlasted Olivia Geneva and Jules Saldana down the stretch for a 6-3, 7-6 triumph.

Norway’s No. 2 doubles pairing of Marisa Pipp and Chloe Mitchem bested Penelope Geneva and Kailey Jayne 6-1, 6-1 and the Knights’ No. 4 duo of Amara Humphreys and Katie Reath handled Rhiannon Johnson and Kaya Grassinger 6-2, 6-1.

“Both teams faced a tough opponent in the wind on Monday,” Norway coach Cassandra Gustafson said. “Iron Mountain put up a solid fight — their players are tough competitors who made us work for every point.

“Matches like these help both teams get better. The Knights’ commanding victory highlights both their depth and consistency, as every player contributed to our team’s success.”

On the other side, Iron Mountain coach Keith Houtari said his players continue to work on developing their skills.

“We’re still finding our way as a team and I am seeing improvement,” he said. “I have a very young, inexperienced team, and it takes time to learn how to play and what it takes to be successful. The girls are definitely putting in the time, not just during practice but on their own time, as well. That’s very encouraging.”
