Marquette wins both ends of Wildcat CC Invitational
KHS’s Murvich places 2nd
MARQUETTE — It appears it will be challenging for Upper Peninsula cross country teams to catch Marquette again this season.
The Sentinels swept both ends of Wildcat Open here Friday with the boys placing five in the top seven and scoring 20 points. Ishpeming Westwood edged Negaunee 62-68 for the runner-up spot. Manistique took sixth with 139.
Marquette’s girls placed all their runners in the top 12 and tallied 25 points. They were followed by Negaunee 66, Kingsford 82 and Stephenson 83.
Sentinels’ senior Rorik Holmquist won the 3.1-mile race in 16:34.2, followed by classmate Peter Argeropoulos at 16:49.3 and Negaunee senior Henry Plummer (17:38.8).
Marquette senior Ella Fure won the girls’ race in 20:57.2 and Kingsford sophomore Maria Murvich placed second (21:16.2).
“I just did what I had to do to win the race,” Fure said. “I had mono during the summer and missed about four weeks of training. I’m feeling a lot better now. I didn’t lose much fitness and had two workouts so far. I’m really happy about how our team did. We have a lot of freshmen. This is new to them.”
Murvich was followed by Marquette freshman Emma Ziegler at 22:00.6.
