Sentinels make late charge to down Flivvers

KINGSFORD – The Kingsford Flivvers battled Marquette to a draw for 75 minutes before the Sentinels scored back-to-back goals to break the stalemate en route to a 4-3 victory over the Flivvers Tuesday in Marquette.

With three minutes remaining, Kingsford pulled within one on a goal by Gavin Kinsella off a pass from Jonah Nelson, but the Flivvers were unable to regain the draw.

“It was a hard-fought game,” Kingsford coach Zach Celello said. “Although we were disappointed with the result, it showed us that we have the ability to stand toe-to-toe with quality opponents like Marquette.”

The Flivvers (3-2) opened the scoring when Jett Buckley disposed a Marquette defender and scored an unassisted tally for a 1-0 lead six minutes into the contest.

Marquette (6-2-1) equalized shortly before halftime and then took a 2-1 advantage just minutes into the second half.

However, Kingsford tied the score at 2-all seven minutes into the second stanza on a goal by Nelson off a feed from Buckley.

The Flivvers, who have defeated Grayling, Sault Ste. Marie and Ortonville Brandon, will travel to Wrightstown, Wis. for their next match on Tuesday.

“We’re looking forward to regrouping and getting back into action,” Celello said.

Starting at $3.50/week.
