Wykons take down Sentinels
IRON RIVER – The West Iron County girls tennis team won three of the four singles matches and the top two doubles flights en route to a 5-3 victory over Marquette Tuesday at the Nelson Field tennis courts.
No. 1 singles Grace Smith lost the fewest games among the Wykon winners, defeating Nora Skytta 6-1, 6-2. No. 3 singles Erin Kolbas followed up with a 6-1, 6-4 decision over Kirra Longtine, while No. 4 singles Taylor Economy knocked off Morgan Downey 6-4, 6-2.
In doubles, West Iron’s Destiny Lemery and Aubrey Richardson defeated Eva Kentala and Lola Rink 6-2, 6-4 at the top flight, while Olivia Lamay and Julia White fought off Logan McFarren and Kylie Smith 6-3, 7-5 in the No. 2 match.
The longest match of the day came at No. 2 singles where Marquette’s Stella Dehlin outlasted WIC’s Kaycee Ingram 5-7, 6-3, 11-9.
The Sentinels won the No. 3 and No. 4 doubles matches in straight sets.
