Kingsford went 2-1 during a weekend soccer trip into Wisconsin, bowing 3-1 to Kimberly before posting 4-1 wins over both Amery and Washburn.

KHS coach Zach Celello said the Flivvers bounced back from a tough loss last week to Houghton by playing “a great game” against highly-rated Kimberly. “Despite the result, they played confident team soccer and never backed down from the challenge,” Celello said.

Kingsford, 9-4 overall, will host Marquette today, marking the first contest on the new turf at Flivver Field. The junior varsity game is set for 3 p.m. followed by the varsity match at 5 p.m.

On Friday in Kimberly, Jonah Nelson scored Kingsford’s only goal in the 63rd minute to cut the Papermakers’ advantage to 2-1. Kimberly added a final goal with six minutes remaining.

On Saturday, Kingsford faced two other Wisconsin schools in Eagle River.

Against Amery, Gavin Kinsella scored from outside the box just three minutes into the game. Gavin Hendricks, assisted by Jett Buckley, later connected on a volley. Landen Kenny extended the lead to 3-0 before halftime on a shot from well outside the box.

“With six minutes to play in the game, Jett Buckley gathered a through ball from Colin Micheau and scored from outside the box to make it 4-0,” Celello said. Amery then converted a penalty kick to make it 4-1 with a minute remaining.

Against Washburn, Kinsella scored unassisted early in the contest. Kinsella later found Hendricks, who finished to make it 2-0.

“With six minutes to play in the first half, Jett Buckley crossed the ball to Hendricks, who scored to make it 3-0,” Celello said.

In the second half, Washburn scored on penalty kick and Kingsford scored off an own-goal.

“We feel we’ve gotten back into a groove on the field,” Celello said.
