Kingsford’s Murvich shines at Pictured Rocks CC meet

MUNISING — Kingsford cross country runner Maria Murvich continued her impressive sophomore season by winning the individual girls championship of the El Harger Cross Country Invitational Tuesday at Pictured Rocks Golf Course in Munising.
Running on the course where the U.P. Finals will be held on Oct. 18, Murvich recorded a 20:45.8 to defeat Keira Waterman of Negaunee (20:45.8) and Sela Niska of Houghton (20:45.9).
Murvich’s effort helped the Flivvers finish in sixth place with 149 points. Houghton won the girls team title with 41 points, while Sault Ste. Marie placed second with 50. Twenty-one schools participated in the girls event with nine fielding enough runners to qualify for a team score.
Both North Central and Forest Park had girls runners competing. The Jets were paced by senior Kaiya Davis who took 25th in 22:55.4, while the Lady Trojans were topped by junior Bella Tarter, who placed 32nd with a 23:16.2
In the boys event, Kingsford’s Cavan Mulligan placed eighth with a time of 18:00.4. Shea Armstrong of Sault Ste. Marie captured the individual championship in 17:14.9 with Steven Kirschner of Rudyard finishing runner-up in 17:38.4.
Forest Park’s William Hoffman placed 18th with a time of 18:54.7 to lead the Trojans. North Central did not have any boys runners competing.
Sault Ste. Marie earned the boys team title with 52 points and Houghton took second with 71. Forest Park led local teams by placing seventh with 238 points, while the Flivvers wound up 10th with 262 points in the event that featured 15 scoring teams and five non-scoring teams.
