Knights explode for 50-point win over Jets

POWERS — The Norway football team’s ability to make big plays was on stage Friday night in Powers.

Senior Owen Baij passed for three touchdowns and ran for two more, while junior Kaleb Lapine caught two and ran for another as the Knights routed North Central 58-8 in a Skyline Central Conference contest at North Central High School.

Josh Schiltz added a 5-yard rushing touchdown and Noah Peterson returned a fumble for another score and built a 58-0 lead after three quarters.

“It was a great Friday night for our football program,” Norway coach Andrew Medina said. “Happy for our kids to come out with a win against a great football program on the road in North Central.

“We took care of the football and created four turnovers, which is what we preached all week in practice.”

Baij got the scoring started with an 18-yard run in the first quarter. The 2-point conversion run failed, leaving Norway with a 6-0 lead.

The Knights took a two-touchdown lead when Baij hit Lapine for a 45-yard connection, leaving Norway up 14-0 after Baij’s conversion run.

Schiltz recorded his TD next to end the first quarter with the Knights up 20-0.

In the second period, Baij hit Lapine with a 51-yard touchdown pass before Lapine took off for a 60-yard scamper as the Knights pushed their lead to 34-0 at the halftime break.

Baij got loose for a 73-yard touchdown run to start his team’s 24-point third quarter. He then hit Elliott Kraemer for a 12-yard strike before Peterson’s defensive score left the Knights with a 58-point advantage after three quarters.

The Jets (1-1) recorded their lone TD in the fourth.

“Our kids did everything we asked of them from start to finish,” Medina said.

Through two games, the Knights have outscored their opponents 126-10.

Norway will travel to take on St. Ignace Saints Friday in a battle of unbeatens to be held at McCann Football Field.

Starting at $3.50/week.
