Knights power past Saints for 3rd win

ST. IGNACE — Owen Baij rushed for three touchdowns while Kaleb LaPine ran for two to lead the UPSSA eight-player No. 2 Norway Knights to a 40-6 throttling of St. Ignace on Friday night.

“It was a good road win for our football team,” Norway coach Andrew Mendina said. “We went up against a good 2-0 St. Ignace team, but our guys came to play in all phases of the game.”

Baij rushed for consecutive 17-yard TD runs in the first quarter with Josh Schiltz adding the 2-point conversion runs to put the Knights up 16-0. LaPine then followed with a 10-yard TD run, and after Baij ran in the conversion, Norway led 24-0.

That score remained until the third quarter when Baij scored his third touchdown on a 5-yarder and then ran in the conversion to give his team a 32-0 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.

LaPine’s 21-yard run, followed by an Elliott Kramer to LaPine connection for the conversion, finished the scoring for the Knights (3-0).

The Saints (2-1) added their touchdown in the fourth after falling behind 40-0.

LaPne led Norway in rushing with 126 yards on 10 carries, while Baij recorded 98 yards on 13 carries and Schiltz logged 57 yards on seven attempts.

Baij completed 3 of 5 passes for 47 yards in the game.

Keith Burcar had a big night defensively for Norway with two sacks, three tackles for loss and four unassisted tackles. Chase Moraska added a fumble recovery.

Kramer topped the Knights in unassisted tackles with five, Cameron Varda had four unassisted and three assisted, Landon Ross recorded four unassisted and three assisted and Schiltz finished with four unassisted and two assisted.

The Knights will host Ironwood (1-2) on Friday.

“Looking forward to getting back to a home game this week against Ironwood,” Mendina said. “It’s our homecoming so I know the kids will be fired up to play.”
