Nordics fight off Mountaineers
The North Dickinson and Iron Mountain volleyball teams went toe-to-toe for five sets Monday evening at Carl F. Lemin Gymnasium with the Nordics scoring a 25-19, 18-25, 26-28, 25-19, 15-8 decision over the Mountaineers.
ND coach Taylor Johnson said her team had to find a way to contend with IM’s middle block to win the match.
“We came out ready to play taking the first set easily, but then in the second and third sets Bella Person started heating up for Iron Mountain and made us rethink our offensive strategy,” Johnson. “We got back into a rhythm early in the fourth set and played much better having figured out how to get around Iron Mountain’s strong block.”
Cami Sleeter led the Nordics’ attack with 16 kills with Aubrey Applekamp and Dakota Massie following with 11 and 10, respectively.
Setter Raina Ledzian dished out 33 assists, while adding eight kills, 10 digs and four aces for the Nordics (7-5-2).
“Cami Sleeter was a force at the net, not only racking up kills but also keeping Iron Mountain’s defense guessing with her aggressive play,” Johnson said. “Dakota Massie and Aubrey Applekamp contributed steady all-around performances, while Raina Ledzian ran a balanced offense to keep our hitters in rhythm.”
The Nordics were slated to face Forest Park (14-1) Tuesday in a Skyline Central Conference match, while Iron Mountain (3-8-1) will travel to Manistique (5-4-2) on Thursday.
