IRON MOUNTAIN — Pete Monette of Breitung Township was a carpenter foreman working for Turner Construction Co. on a renovation of Lambeau Field when the Packers hosted the Washington Redskins on Sept. 24, 2001 — the first primetime game after the tragic events of 9/11.
It’s a game remembered as much for its national backdrop as for the play on the field. The Packers routed Washington 37-0 behind three touchdown passes by Brett Favre and 116 yards rushing by Ahman Green.
A memorable pregame image featured Chris Gizzi, a Packers linebacker and Air Force reservist, carrying an American flag. He ran from the Packers’ tunnel across the field and waved the flag to a roaring crowd.
“The ground was shaking,” Gizzi has said.
Monette spent much of the game at the Packers’ tunnel, handling security oversight for the renovation. He’s collected memorabilia from the Monday night game, including an autographed photo of Gizzi and autographed game programs.
He’s saved his field passes as well.
“It can still give me chills,” the U.S. Army veteran said of remembering the pregame events.
On Thursday night — the 24th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks — the Packers again played Washington, again with the 2001 Gizzi highlight prominent.
Monette on Thursday pointed to something else — the Packers in 2001 opened their season at home against the Detroit Lions, just as they did this season.
“It just hit me this morning,” he said, which prompted him to gather up memorabilia — newspapers, photographs, and “Teamwork,” his book about the 2001-03 renovation that increased Lambeau Stadium’s capacity by 12,032 seats.
The Packers in their 2001 opener defeated the Lions 28-6. On Sunday, they won 27-13.
