With impressive play from their middle hitters, the Kingsford Flivvers won their third consecutive dual match to begin the season with a 25-14, 25-14, 26-24 sweep of Menominee in a Great Northern Conference match played Tuesday in Menominee.

“Getting our middles involved in the offense tonight was a ton of fun,” KHS coach Jaclynn Kreider said. “Freshman middle Staysha Jarski had eight kills with a hitting efficiency of 0.636 and senior middle Cassie Olson had five kills and no errors. Both of them had standout nights.”

Mylee Kreider added seven kills to the attack, while Mckynzee Kreider had five, Alyvia Kowalski and Mya Brunswick posted two each and Adelyn Normand, Onika Smeester and Lakyn Wallis had one apiece.

Mckynzee Kreider and Karly Trevillian ran the offense, finishing with 18 and 11 assists, respectively.

Smeester and Trevillian paced the Flivvers (9-0 against U.P. competition) with four aces each to go with two from both Mckynzee Kreider and Brunswick.

Aili Freiberg (10) makes a save and continues the volley as Norway teammate Alyssa dela Cruz looks on Tuesday.

Wallis topped Kingsford’s defense with 11 digs, while Olivia Nash notched nine, Brunswick recorded six, Trevillian and Mckynzee Kreider both logged five and Smeester posted four.

Jarski had her team’s lone block.

Despite the rather lopsided win, Coach Kreider said the Maroons tested her team in one aspect.

“Menominee did a great job of serving aggressive,” she said. “They were able to get us out of system often and our (outside hitters) were not able to execute. We are going to need to keep working on first-ball executions as that is a critical area of needed growth for us.”

The Flivvers will head to Marquette (3-5) on Thursday to take on the Sentinels in a GNC match.

The Knights prevailed at home Tuesday, defeating the Rockets 25-14, 25-13, 25-14.

Norway coach Meghan Rossato said she was impressed with how the team worked together and kept their energy up.

“Addy (Burklund) came out with some huge hits in the second set. For how impressive her hitting is, it’s her digs in the back row that continue to surprise me, she just reads and it looks effortless,” Rossato said.

Both Aili Freiberg and Kendalll Burklund were credited for consistent serving.

“The girls went for the ball and didn’t give up when the option existed,” Rossato said. “Kendall made some huge plays when it came to taking a ball that others would have given up on and turned it into a point. Tessa (Castelaz) Aili, and Ashley all did the same, focusing on keeping your feet moving and going for it without hesitation.”
