RAPID RIVER — Rapid River junior quarterback Lane Olson threw for 375 yards and six touchdowns, and the Rockets rolled up 624 yards of offense in their 58-32 eight-player victory over Forest Park at Rapid River High School.
Olson completed 13 of 24 throws Friday night and fired touchdown passes of 29, 11, 48, 69, 21 and 84 yards. Sophomore Brennen Kee came on to throw a 60-yard scoring strike late in the fourth quarter for the Rockets (2-2).
The Trojans (1-3) struggled to maintain possession of the ball, committing five turnovers in their defeat.
“I am disappointed in the outcome of the game, but the coach staff saw vast improvement from the previous week,” FP coach Brian Fabbri said, referring to his team’s 58-7 loss to North Dickinson on Sept. 11. “Offensively we were able to move the ball, but costly turnovers were the turning point in the game.
“Rapid River took advantage of the big play and were able to convert some timely third and fourth downs.”
The teams traded TDs through the first 16 minutes of play. The Rockets took an 8-0 lead at the 7:40 mark of the opening period on a 29-yard pass, but the Trojans answered just 19 seconds later when Trent Kannich rumbled in from 46 yards and recorded the 2-point conversion to knot the score.
Five minutes later, Rapid River regained its 8-point lead on an 11-yard scoring strike and 2-point conversion. Again, Forest Park responded with a score of its own when Noah Starr hit Dietrich Rasner with a 47-yard TD followed by Kannich’s conversion to make the count 16-16 with 8:09 to play before halftime.
But the Rockets tallied two more TD passes before the break to go up 30-16.
Forest Park pulled to within 44-32 early in the fourth quarter on a 2-yard run from Kannich and a 2-point conversion on a pass from Starr to Eli Brzoznowski.
Rapid River then put the game away with an 84-yard touchdown strike just 55 seconds later and added its final TD pass with 1:52 remaining.
Kannich put together a big night for FP with 254 yards rushing on 34 carries (7.5 per carry). He added five receptions for 29 yards. Starr completed 9 of 18 passes for 103 yards and rushed for 20 yards on 8 carries.
Forest Park, hampered by injuries to its top running back Dax Huuki (ankle) and last season’s state championship quarterback Vic Giuliani (knee surgery), will attempt to get back in the win column at Lake Linden-Hubbell (3-1) on Saturday.
“We will get back to the basics this week in practice and prepare for a very good Lake Linden Hubbell team,” Fabbri said.
