Trojans hold off Ishpeming

CRYSTAL FALLS — Forest Park’s Noah Starr threw for 149 yards and a touchdown as the Trojans improved to 1-1 in eight-player football with a 28-22 win over Ishpeming at Dick Mettlach Field on Friday.

Forest Park opened the scoring on a 47-yard pass from Starr to Aiden Waldo. Dax Huuki added a 13-yard scoring run and Trent Kannich scored on three-yard and one-yard plunges.

“The coaching staff was very happy with the effort on Friday night,” said Forest Park coach Brian Fabbri. “It was a great atmosphere with both teams celebrating the 50th anniversary of their 1975 MHSAA state championship victories. Even with the rain and wind, both teams played a great game that came down to the last possession.”

The Trojans led 28-14 before Ishpeming closed to within six points late in the fourth quarter on a 95-yard Grady Gauthier TD run and conversion.

“I was very happy with our team’s growth from last week to this week,” Fabbri said. “We won the turnover battle and limited our penalties. Trent Kannich and the offense took over in the second half and were able to run the clock out (after Ishpeming’s touchdown run).”

Dietrich Rasner converted a pair of extra-point kicks and ran for a two-point score for the Trojans.

Starr, Rasner, Kannich and Devin Bennett paced the Forest Park defense, with Rasner recovering two fumbles and Kannich forcing one.

Kannich had 21 rushes for 80 yards while Huuki carried 13 times for 66 yards. Starr completed 10 of 15 passes with one interception.

“We are looking forward to a battle with North Dickinson for our first road game of the season, Fabbri said.

Kickoff is at 6 p.m. Friday at James D. Priestap Memorial Field.

Starting at $3.50/week.
