Trojans look to enter win column against Ishpeming
Game marks 50 years since twin state championships
Forest Park will host Ishpeming Friday in a game that marks 50 years since a 1975 season in which each school won a state championship.
MHSAA offered its first postseason for football in 1975 — 16 teams qualified to compete across Class A, B, C and D. Ishpeming hoisted a trophy in Class C and Forest Park in Class D.
Before Friday’s 6 p.m. kickoff at Dick Mettlach Field, the schools will honor their 1975 11-player teams. The respective captains will be the honorary captains, including at the coin toss.
Ishpeming and Forest Park have switched to eight-player formats and the Trojans are the defending MHSAA eight-player Division 2 state champions. But they’ll enter Friday’s contest with an 0-1 record, having fallen to Newberry 22-20 in their season opener.
Trojans coach Brian Fabbri said he was happy with his team’s overall effort — first-time varsity starters especially — but was disappointed in the outcome.
“Newberry had a long drive and came ready to play and I did not have our team ready to play,” Fabbri said. “We lost the turnover battle and had too many penalty yards to overcome a well-coached Newberry team.”
The Trojans trailed 16-14 at halftime, with their scores coming on a 26-yard run by Dax Huuki and a 58-yard pass from Noah Starr to Aiden Waldo. Dietrich Rasner added a pair of PAT kicks.
Newberry upped its lead to 22-14 in the third quarter on a 64-yard TD run by Matthew Luebkert. Forest Park answered in the fourth on a 73-yard scamper by Huuki, but a two-point conversion failed.
“Looking forward to getting back on the practice field and getting prepared for a big game this coming Friday with Ishpeming,” Fabbri said.
Huuki led Forest Park’s rushing attack with 155 yards on 14 carries. Trent Kannich had 56 rushing yards, also in 14 trips. Rasner managed 34 yards in seven attempts.
Starr was 4 of 6 through the air for 83 yards, one TD and an interception.
Huuki contributed to 11 tackles to lead the defense, along with Rasner, 10 tackles; Trent Kannich, nine; and Brody McBee, seven.
Forest Park lost two fumbles in Friday’s contest.
Ishpeming fell to Ontonagon 21-14 in its opener.
