Wykons’ doubles teams lead the way

IRON MOUNTAIN – The West Iron County Wykons posted victories in all four doubles matches and added a win at No. 1 singles to defeat Iron Mountain 5-1 Wednesday in a contest that included two flights that were not played.

West Iron’s top doubles team, Destiny Lemery and Aubrey Richardson, posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over Lindsey Lewandowski and Ella Theisen. No. 2 doubles Julia White and Olivia Lamay followed with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Olivia Geneva and Kailey Jayne.

The No. 3 doubles match was the most competitive of the day as West Iron’s Madison Cronkright and Vivian Holm edged Penelope Geneva and Julianna Saldana 6-2, 3-6, 10-8. WIC’s No. 4 doubles Marlee Benson and Rochelle Bear added a 6-2, 6-3 triumph over Kaya Grassinger and Rhiannon Johnson.

The teams split the two singles matches held. Sophomore Grace Smith captured the No. 1 singles match for the Wykons, defeating Alysia Wood 6-1, 6-2, while IM’s No. 2 singles player Avea Brown upended Kaycee Ingram 6-3, 6-2.

The No. 3 and No. 4 singles matches were not played.

West Iron 7

Gladstone 1

With straight-set victories in all but one flight, the Wykons posted a dominant 7-1 victory over Gladstone on Monday at the Nelson Field tennis courts in Iron River.

The Wykons swept the doubles matches and won the top three singles flights in their victory. Aubrey Richardson and Destiny Lemery defeated Lillian Ketcham and Mackenzie Nelson 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1 doubles, while Olivia Lamay and Julia White topped Lola Vargo and Ella Howes by the same scoreline at No. 2 doubles.

Vivian Holm and Madison Cronkright knocked off Elenore Mathias and Miranda Drielick 6-0, 6-3 at No. 3 doubles while Marlee Benson and Rochelle Bear upended Bree Wetthuhn and Taylor Hastings 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4 doubles.

In singles, No. 1 Grace Smith rolled past Carly Maki 6-2, 6-0, No. 2 Kaycee Ingram defeated Alexis Burch 6-4, 6-1 an No. 3 Erin Kolbas recorded a 6-3, 6-2 win over Tati Martinez.

Gladstone’s Madison Sundquist scored the Braves’ lone point with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over the WIC’s Taylor Economy.
