Kingsford’s Division 3 soccer season came to an end in a 4-0 loss to Elk Rapids in the District 33 championship game Friday.

The Flivvers hit the road for the district title match after a 4-1 victory over Grayling on Wednesday at Flivver Field.

Down early but certainly not out in the semifinal, the Flivvers rebounded after falling behind six minutes into the match.

Evan Grymes scored two goals and added an assist, while Gavin Kinsella and Jett Buckley netted one goal each in the Kingsford win.

“It was a great team win,” Kingsford coach Zach Celello said. “The back line limited scoring chances, and the midfielders and attackers created plenty of opportunities for us. We had lots of fan support, and it was great to defend our home field one more time.”

The Vikings took a quick lead on a free kick and held that advantage until Kinsella leveled the match at 1-all on what Celello described as a “beautiful volley” with 14 minutes left in the first half.

Both teams had an opportunity to take the lead late in the half. Two minutes before the break, Grayling committed a foul in the box, but its goalkeeper turned away the penalty kick.

Just one minute later, the reverse happened but Flivver goalkeeper Landon Adam stopped the penalty kick as the match stayed tied heading into the second half.

“He’s been great all season for us, and that save helped us to keep momentum heading into the second half,” Celello said of Adam.

From there, the Flivvers dominated the match positionally and that led to Buckley’s tally off an assist from Grymes to give the hosts a 2-1 advantage.

Kingsford held that lead until Grymes scored off a rebound on a shot by Kinsella with two minutes remaining to give the Flivvers some insurance at 3-1.

One minute later, after some impressive build-up play, Landen Kenny played a pass to Grymes, who fired a shot to the near post and scored his second goal to account for the final 4-1 score.

“We made some halftime adjustments, and (the players) came out firing on all cylinders for the next 40 minutes,” Celello said. “It was probably the best half they’ve played all season. We’ve been stressing throughout the playoffs that they need to earn the ability to play again every time they’re on the field from this point forward, and they did exactly that.”

The Flivvers carried a six-match unbeaten streak into Friday’s district final at Elk Rapids. The Elks won their 14th consecutive match Wednesday with a 4-0 home victory over Houghton in the other District 33 semifinal.

After their win over Kingsford, Elk Rapids moves on to face Fremont in a regional semifinal Tuesday.
