Flivvers seek balance after win at Houghton
While the Division 1-3 top-ranked Kingsford Flivvers have won all 15 of their dual matches this season, they remain in search of their top level of performance.
After her team’s 21-25, 25-23, 25-22, 25-20 win at Houghton on Thursday evening, Flivvers’ coach Jaclynn Kreider spoke of this search.
“We need to find a way to balance our energy with being disciplined,” Kreider said. “We have been working on being more focused on the small aspects of the game, but I feel like then we struggle to keep our enthusiasm level high. When we are able to put the two mindsets together the outcome is extremely positive.”
The Flivvers fell behind quickly in the opening set, and although they showed signs of coming out of their funk, they never recovered enough to overtake the fourth-ranked Gremlins (7-6).
But things did shift at the start of the second set, helped by the return of junior outside hitter Mylee Kreider, who played limited time after missing the last match against Iron Mountain.
Kreider finished the match with six kills, six digs and one ace.
“Last night we had to switch up the lineup a few different times to find what worked based on some injuries we are dealing with,” Coach Kreider said. “I am confident in all of the girls on this team to step in at any point, but they have to also be confident and comfortable and again that is something we will work through.”
Middle hitter Cassie Olson played another effective match, finishing with a team-high 11 kills, two solo blocks and two assisted blocks. Mckynzee Kreider offered one of the best matches of her rookie campaign with seven kills, 16 assists, eight digs and three assisted blocks, while classmate Staysha Jarksi produced six kills, two blocks and one assisted block.
Mya Brunswick notched four aces and six digs, Alivia Nash fired three aces and added 15 digs, Lakyn Wallis contributed two aces and 12 digs and Onika Smeester served two aces and picked up nine digs.
Kingsford’s second setter, Karly Trevillian contributed 12 assists to the winning effort.
The Flivvers are back at home on Tuesday when they host Menominee (1-12).
