Knights, Nordics own top regional seeds

Norway finished the regular season with a 9-0 record, the first Knights football team to hit that mark since 1976. The Knights reigned as champions of the Great Lakes Eight Conference-East with a 6-0 record. In the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association final poll of the season, the Knights were a unanimous choice for the No. 1 eight-player team. North Dickinson (9-0), an 8-player Division 2 school, was ranked second in the UPSSA poll. The Nordics captured the Great Lakes Eight Conference-Central championship with a 4-0 record. Norway and North Dickinson hold the top regional seeds in their respective divisions in the MHSAA football playoffs.

Norway (9-0) hosts Gogebic at 6 p.m. Friday in Division 1.

In Division 2, North Dickinson (9-0) hosts St. Ignace (6-3) at 1 p.m. Saturday.

A Norway victory would have the Knights hosting the winner of Pickford (7-1) vs. Indian River Inland Lakes (9-0) next weekend. Norway is ranked second in the Associated Press 8-Player Division 1 poll, trailing only Indian River Inland Lakes. In the MHSAA playoffs, however, Norway ranks as the top seed in the four-team Region 1.

Once the four regional 8-player champions are determined, the 8-player state semifinal games will be played at neutral sites assigned by the MHSAA. The 8-player finals will take place Nov. 22 at Northern Michigan University’s Superior Dome in Marquette.

A win by North Dickinson on Saturday would have the Nordics hosting the winner of North Central vs. Lake Linden-Hubbell for the Division 2 Region 1 title.

North Dickinson is ranked fourth in AP’s 8-player Division 2 poll.

In 11-player action, Bark River-Harris is the top Division 8 seed in Region 1, District 1. That bracket has the Broncos hosting West Iron County (4-4) at 7 p.m. Friday, while Iron Mountain (5-3) hosts L’Anse (5-4) at 6 p.m. Friday.

In Division 5, Kingsford (6-3) is the No. 2 seed in Region 1, District 1, hosting Gladwin (5-4) at noon Saturday. A win by the Flivvers would have them either hosting Negaunee (6-3), or traveling to Ogemaw Heights (8-1).
