NMU snaps losing streak with 538 yards rushing

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. — The Northern Michigan football team got back in the win column in historic fashion on Saturday afternoon, rushing for a program-record 538 yards in a dominant 42-21 victory over the Roosevelt Lakers.

The 538-yard total crushed the previous program mark of 477, set 66 years ago in 1959 against UW-Milwaukee. For just the seventh time in Division II, two running backs from the same team went over 200 yards, with Noah Dobert totaling 243 yards and three touchdowns and Jahi Wood adding 233 yards and two scores. The pair combined for five of Northern’s six touchdowns.

Austin Ridl also added 62 yards rushing and was responsible for NMU’s other score, a 67-yard scamper on the option, the longest play for the ‘Cats this season.

Of NMU’s 72 plays, the Wildcats opted to run on all but one.

The win breaks a 28-game losing streak for NMU (1-6, 1-3). It was the first win since a 33-11 victory against Lake Erie College in the final game of the season on Nov. 12, 2022.

Roosevelt fell to 1-5 overall and 0-3 in the GLIAC.

“I’m so happy and proud of our program today,” said coach Shane Richardson following the win. “We have a group of guys that continue to believe and show up every day to keep striving towards improvement and being their best.”

Michigan Tech 10

HOUGHTON — The Michigan Tech football team turned the ball over five times in the first half at Kearly Stadium en route to No. 1 Ferris State winning its 21st consecutive game on Saturday afternoon.

Ferris State (7-0, 3-0 GLIAC) saw it three-game shutout streak come to an end as Michigan Tech (5-2, 2-1 GLIAC) produced a 32-yard field goal from sophomore kicker Avery Kucharski at the beginning of the second quarter making it a 7-3 game as true freshman quarterback Elliott Larner recorded his second career touchdown late in the fourth quarter.

“Our expectations coming in for this game were a lot different than the way it went — I love the way our guys played, the energy and physicality were great, we just didn’t execute well enough to beat a team like that,” said Tech head coach Dan Mettlach. “Five turnovers in the first half is too much to overcome, let alone the penalties on top of it–to beat a team like that you’ve got to play a clean game and execute when it’s necessary and we just didn’t do that today.”

Kingsford’s Nic Nora had five receptions for 26 yards.

The Huskies will be back on the road next week, for the shortest road trip of the season, traveling across U.S. 41 for a clash at Northern Michigan for the 23rd installment of the Miner’s Cup.

Starting at $3.50/week.
