No. 1 Knights pummel Rudyard
NORWAY — Through eight regular-season games, the Norway Knights have been nearly unstoppable on offense. The list of explosive performances now includes a 61-8 rout of Rudyard in a Great Lakes Eight Conference East matchup on Friday at Ronberg Field.
Josh Schiltz rushed for four touchdowns, Kaleb LaPine added two and Owen Baij contributed one touchdown on the ground and caught another from LaPine as UPSSA eight-player No. 1 Norway reached the 60-point mark for the second time this season.
In its eight victories, the undefeated Knights have averaged 49.4 points per game.
“Proud of the kids for coming out and playing a clean game from start to finish,” Norway coach Andrew Mendina said.
Norway got things started early on a 51-yard TD run from Baij, who then connected with Elliott Kraemer for the 2-point conversion. The Knights then added a 9-yard scoring run by Schiltz and a 27-yarder from LaPine to build a 24-0 advantage heading into the second quarter.
The scoring blitz continued into the second frame as LaPine hit Baij for a 33-yard TD strike, Schiltz added a 4-yard run to paydirt and LaPine sprinted 37 yards for another score as the Knights took a 46-0 stranglehold on the Bulldogs (2-6) at the halftime break.
Schiltz finished off his team’s scoring with touchdown runs of 50 yards and 61 yards for a 61-0 lead after three quarters.
Rudyard scored its lone touchdown on a 70-yard run in the fourth. Prior to that play, the Bulldogs had minus 15 yards rushing, courtesy of three sacks by Cameron Varda and one each from Schiltz, Chase Moraska and Keith Burcar.
Noah Pearson recovered two fumbles for the Knights and Moraska had another.
Landon Ross led Norway in tackles with five solo and seven assisted, while Schiltz and Varda added four solo and three assisted each. Kraemer recorded four solo tackles.
The Knights have much to play for in their final regular season game against Munising. With a victory over the Mustangs (0-8) on Friday night at Ronberg Field, Norway will secure its first 9-0 season since 1976.
