Verrett, Miners top visiting Trojans

BESSEMER — Junior quarterback Jayden Verrett rushed for 244 yards and three touchdowns and threw for another to lead the Gogebic Miners to a 32-0 victory over the visiting Forest Park Trojans in a Great Lakes Conference West game Friday.

The game marked the return to action for the Trojans after they were forced to forfeit because of injuries in their previously scheduled game against Lake Linden-Hubbell on Sept. 27.

“We were very happy to be back on the field after taking a week off to get healthy,” FP coach Brian Fabbri said. “We executed our game plan right away to control the ball and run the clock (but) the first drive ended on the Gogebic 4-yard line with a lost fumble.

“Overall, Gogebic is a very good football team, and we cannot make mistakes that keep points off the board.”

On the next play after the fumble, the 5-foot-11 inch, 160-pound Verrett took off for a 96-yard touchdown run to put his team on top 6-0 with 7:09 remaining in the opening quarter.

Five minutes later, Verrett got loose for a 43-yard score that gave the Miners (6-0) a 12-0 advantage heading into the second quarter.

Gogebic tallied three more touchdowns before halftime. Junior Cory Aspinwall scored on a 2-yard run at the 7:33 mark before Verrett hit senior Aiden Partanen for a 64-yard scoring strike to help the Miners build a 26-0 edge with 3:41 remaining before the break.

Verrett then finished the scoring on a 44-yard run with 2:37 left before halftime.

The Miners finished with 364 yards of offense, while the Trojans (1-5) wound up with 148 yards.

Trent Kannich led Forest Park with 104 yards rushing on 13 carries, while Nick Stachowicz recorded 17 yards on two attempts.

Devin Koga completed 3 of 4 passes for 26 yards for Forest Park.

The Trojans head back to Gogebic County Friday when they take on Ironwood (2-4).

“We left the game mostly healthy and are looking forward to Ironwood this coming Friday,” Fabbri said.

Starting at $3.50/week.
