NEGAUNEE – The early-season road warrior Kingsford Flivvers collected their second win in three tries with a 5-2 decision over Negaunee on Thursday evening in Great Lakes Hockey Conference action at the Negaunee Ice Arena.
The Flivvers (2-1-0), led by two goals each from sophomores Casey Clisch and Paolo Lenzi, carried a 5-0 advantage well into the final period before the Miners (1-3-0) broke through with a pair of late tallies.
“I thought our puck movement was pretty good and I really liked the power play,” Flivvers head coach Greg Wadge said. “I thought we handled the puck really well. Will (Murvich) had a nice pass over to Casey on the weak side for one, which is good to see. We haven’t done that much lately so that was good.”
Negaunee had a prime chance to take an early lead against Kingsford in the first period with a power play that turned into a 5-on-3 advantage for roughly 40 seconds, but the Flivvers were able to squash the opportunity.
“We talked about staying out of the box, and we ended up having to kill off that 5-on-3,” Wadge said. “I don’t know how legit the penalties were but it was good to see the penalty kill was working as well.”

Kingsford took a 1-0 lead at 5:29 of the first with an unassisted goal by Clisch. He added his second just about a minute later at 4:34 on the power play with the feed from Murvich and an assist from junior defenseman Seth Greenleaf. The markers were Clisch’s second and third of the season.
Senior Jake Deuter added his third goal of the season at 7:31 of the second period, coming through the slot and burying a top shelf shot. Clisch and Greenleaf had assists on the score.
Lenzi made it 4-0 at 3:36 of the second, getting help from junior Jack Spreen. Lenzi’s next goal was 9:05 of the third. Spreen and sophomore defenseman Carter Steber had helpers. Lenzi now has three goals on the season.
Senior goalie Nate Scullon took his shutout bid into the game’s final minutes before Negaunee senior Nolan O’Dovero got one past him with 6:12 to play and added a second with 1:52 to go.
“Scully played really well,” Wadge said. “He fought through some screens, directed the rebounds to the corners, so yeah, I was super pleased with him.”
Kingsford maintained just a slight edge in shots at 25-23, but the Flivvers mostly controlled the flow and the puck throughout the contest.
A few tweaks to the schedule now has Kingsford heading to DePere, Wis., on Black Friday for a night game at 8 p.m. The Flivvers’ home opener follows on Tuesday, Dec. 2, against Jeffers. That contest is slated for a 5:30 start time at Mountain View Ice Arena.
