Knights earn GL-8 conference honors

Norway won three of the four major 2025 football awards announced by the East Division of the Great Lakes 8 Conference.

Owen Baij was named Offensive Player of the Year and Andy Mendina the Coach of the Year, while the Knights earned Team of the Year.

The other special award went to Pickford’s Caden Chromy as Defensive Player of the Year.

Knights earning first-team All-Conference honors were Keith Burcar, offensive line and defensive tackle; Josh Schiltz, defensive end; Landon Ross, linebacker; Elliot Kraemer, defensive back; Kaleb LaPine, offensive hybrid; and Cameron Varda, defensive hybrid and punter.

Earning second team honors for Norway were Schiltz, running back; Varda, wide receiver; and Ross, offensive line.

Honorable mention went to Norway’s Chase Moraska, offensive line, and LaPine, defensive back.

Norway won the conference’s East Division with a 6-0 record. The Knights, 11-0 overall, will meet Blanchard Montabella on Saturday to decide a berth in the MHSAA Division 1 8-player state championship game.

Also named to the East Division first team were Gunner Bennin, Pickford, running back, defensive back and returner; Grady Gauthier, Ishpeming, running back and defensive back; Avery Murk, Munising, offensive lineman and defensive back; Garrett Lewicki, Newberry, offensive hybrid and defensive end; Caden Lester, St. Ignace, quarterback; Evan Arnold, St. Ignace, wide receiver; Caleb Stocker, Rudyard, offensive line; Kaden Wiltfong, Pickford, linebacker; and Steven Kirschner, Rudyard, kicker.
