Knights, Nordics earn top All-UP 8-player honors

Norway senior Owen Baij was named eight-player Mr. Football as well as the offensive player of the year in a recent vote of the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association.
Additionally, Norway senior Keith Burcar was honored as the Mitchell Synder lineman of the year.
The dream team offense consists of Baij, Burcar, North Dickinson senior lineman Richard Haney, North Dickinson junior wide receiver Trenton Kramer, Gogebic senior lineman Patrick Hokans, Pickford senior running back Gunner Bennin, Ishpeming senior running back Grady Gauthier and Lake Linden-Hubbell junior wide receiver Tyler Axford.
Cedarville-DeTour senior Drew Moser and Gogebic junior Jayden Verrett were named to the dream team offense as athletes.
The dream team defense includes North Dickinson senior lineman Colten Roberts, North Central sophomore lineman Myles Nehring, North Dickinson junior linebacker Jason Graham, Norway defensive back Elliot Kraemer, Gogebic senior lineman Matthew Switzer, Newberry senior lineman Garret Lewicki, Pickford junior linebacker Caden Chromy, Lake Linden-Hubbell junior linebacker Josh Daavettila, Gogebic junior defensive back Cayden Harju and Ontonagon senior defensive back Dyceson Drew.

Dream team special teams selections include Rudyard senior kicker Steven Kirschner, Gogebic senior punter Leland Hollenbeck and Gogebic junior returner Jayden Verrett.
Local players picked to the first team offense include North Dickinson senior lineman Andrew Larson, North Dickinson senior quarterback Brady Jungwirth, and Forest Park senior running back Trent Kannich,
The first team defense includes three Norway Knights — senior lineman Josh Schiltz, junior linebacker Landon Ross and senior linebacker Cameron Varda.
Varda was also selected as the first team’s punter.
North Central junior running back Kaden Malone, Norway junior receiver Kaleb LaPine and North Dickinson senior defensive lineman Ty King were awarded special mention.
North Central senior quarterback Ben Stage was given honorable mention.
The Norway Knights were named the Division 1 team of the year, and the North Dickinson Nordics were selected as the Division 2 team of the year.
The coaches of the two Dickinson County teams were named coaches of the year – Norway’s Andy Mendina and North Dickinson’s Mike Christian.
Newberry’s Garrett Lewicki was picked as the defensive player of the year.
