LadyCats advance to sectional VB final

Florence will play for a WIAA sectional volleyball championship tonight, facing Central Wisconsin Christian at 6 p.m. at Northland Pines High School in Eagle River, Wis.

“Florence is looking to make history as it would be the first time for the school to advance to the state tournament,” said LadyCats coach Teresa Chrisman.

Before a packed house Thursday in Suring, the LadyCats posted a 25-18, 22-25, 25-19, 25-16 victory over the champions of the M & O Conference. Florence played an offensive game from the start in the Division 5 semifinal, spreading the ball and putting down kills.

“Suring took advantage our our miscues, such as missed serves, and we started tipping a little too much,” Chrisman said. “But it really was a great game and showed how tough our Northern Lakes Conference is.”

LadyCats middle Miley VanDenHeuvel went up against Suring counterpart Aliya Cox and settled in to record four blocks. Ashlyn VanDenHeuvel had three blocks from the front row as well.

“Even when we weren’t attacking, we got nice off speed kills.” Chrisman said. “Kelsi Chrisman led the attack with 14 kills and the VanDenHeuvels, Miley and Ashlyn, each had 11.”

Coach Chrisman credited her team’s serve receive in the 3-1 win. “It is so key for us to start with those good passes to get everything going,” she said. “It was just a great team effort in hustle.”

Defensively, Chrisman and Miley VanDenHeuvel led in digs with 12 and 11, respectively. Sami Demuri notched 21 assists.

The state tournament will be held at the Resch Center in Green Bay, Wis.

The Division 5 semifinals are slated for 9 a.m. Thursday, with the championship at 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 8.

Central Wisconsin Christian of Waupun advanced to the sectional final with a 3-2 win Thursday over Green Bay N.E.W. Lutheran. The scores were 25-27, 25-23, 20-25, 25-10, 15-12.

Starting at $3.50/week.
