Trojans fall just short in state semifinal

BATTLE CREEK — Fowler eked out close wins in the first two sets in a 3-2 victory Thursday over Forest Park in Thursday’s MHSAA girls volleyball Division 4 state semifinal at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek.
In the first set, Fowler was a point away from taking it but Forest Park scored the next four points, including three straight kills from Ava Fischer. Fowler went back on top with a kill from Elizabeth Wirth. Josie Simon then served an ace for a 26-24 win.
In the second set, Forest Park had several chances to close it out, but each time Fowler responded. Back-to-back kills from Paige Thelan sent things Fowler’s way in a 30-28 triumph.
The Trojans took the next two sets — 25-20 and 25-19 — including jumping out to a 15-5 lead in the fourth set.
Fowler, however, took a big lead in the deciding fifth set. Kills from Simon and Thelan helped the Eagles build a 10-2 advantage and Wirth had two kills in the final three points to end it at 15-8.
Thelan had 32 kills and 11 digs for Fowler. Simon and Wirth each had 12 kills. Neelah O’Rourke had 53 assists.
Fischer led the Trojans with 28 kills. Josie Anderson added 13 and Harper Anderson had 12. Elsie Williams had 32 assists with Vienna Price adding 17 assists and 17 digs. Harper Anderson also had 17 digs.
Fowler will face Mendon today for the Division 4 title. Mendon beat Ubly in Thursday’s second semifinal 25-18, 25-22, 27-25.
Forest Park finishes the season at 42-2.
