Five Kingsford wrestlers reach podium at St. Ignace tourney
Kingsford wrestlers competed in a St. Ignace tournament over the weekend, finishing second out of 14 teams with five wrestlers reaching the podium.
— Flivvers freshman Caleb Warner finished second at 106. “He upset a few kids to make the finals and he’s honestly been the biggest surprise so far in this young season,” said Kingsford coach Darren Groleau. “He works extremely hard in the practice room and is always wanting to learn. So it was nice to see him make the finals. He battled hard in the finals but just fell a little short.”
— Tyler Bray finished first at 165 with a pin. “Tyler showed why he is one of our hammers and a returning state placer with two pins,” Groleau said.
— Orrin Smith finished first at 175. “He had great day reminding people of how tough he is,” Groleau said. “Orrin would’ve probably been a state qualifier but was sick and missed out. He was beating state qualifiers all last year and he was kind of forgotten about. But not anymore.”
— Jake Lockhart took first at 215. “Jake has high goals and expectations for himself,” Groleau said. “He wants to be down at Ford Field this year and he wants it. You can tell how he’s wrestling right now that he’s hungry.”
— Connor White finished second at 285. “Connor ended up losing to a Division 2 state placer in the finals,” Groleau said. “He’s getting some valuable mat time right now and we’re excited to see what he can accomplish this year.
In other matches, Jacob Patrick went 3-2 with three pins at 150. “Jacob has been improving and working hard this year.” Groleau said. “We had a few of our guys wrestle up a weight class and when they all come down to their more natural weight we’ll be in a good place.”
Zahir Topping, Brady Povolo and Parker Rossato all wrestled up a weight class.
“Jake Sundquist had a great start to the season,” Groleau said. “He ended up getting injured in his semifinal match. We’re looking forward to having him back. Once we get everyone back healthy and in their proper weights we will be just fine.”
Grayling captured the championship at the St. Ignace Invite.
The Flivvers wrestled Tuesday in Iron Mountain again Escanaba and the Mountaineers and will head to Wabeno this weekend for an individual tournament.
