IM collects first hoops win

IRON RIVER – The Iron Mountain Mountaineers used balanced scoring and a stingy defense to defeat the West Iron County Wykons 52-25 in a boys basketball game Friday night at Charles Greenlund Gymnasium.

Brayden Kassin led IM with 15 points, while Charles Baldridge and Quinton Doty added nine each as the Mountaineers equaled their record at 1-1 and provided first-year head coach Kyle Johnson his initial victory.

“Happy with the effort our guys played with,” Johnson said. “We are working on getting better each night, and we did just that. Forced some turnovers and shared the ball well.”

The Mountaineers stayed consistent in their quarterly output as well, with 12 in the first, 13 in the second, 14 in the third and 13 in the fourth.

Iron Mountain has a busy week upcoming with road games at Manistique (1-1) on Monday, at Forest Park on Tuesday and at Norway on Friday.

“We are looking forward to the next week of basketball,” Johnson said.

West Iron heads to Forest Park (2-0) on Monday and then hosts Houghton on Thursday.
