IRON MOUNTAIN – Five Kingsford varsity swimmers posted new U.P. qualifying times as the Flivvers outscored Ishpeming in a meet Tuesday at the Northern Lights YMCA Dickinson Center pool.

Kingsford girls posted a 122-48 triumph, and the boys were 79-66 winners.

“The meet went OK. We had some good performances and some not so good, typical for early season,” Flivvers head coach Jim Lindstrom said. “Our boys team continues to impress. We only had eight guys tonight, missing one of our best freestylers but they were able to pull this one out.”

The new U.P. times were put in by sophomore Aubree Peterson with a win in the 100 backstroke (1:12.92), junior Kailey Matuszewski with a first in the 100 freestyle (1:07.49), senior David Arcand with a victory in the 200 free (2:25.64), senior Sam Lamirand with a first in the 50 free (25.84), and sophomore Allison Deuter who went first in the 500 free (6:01.50).

Lamirand and Deuter won both individual events they swam Tuesday, with Lamirand also fastest in the 100 free (59.73) and Deuter taking the 200 IM (2:28.73). Other multiple event winners included junior Thomas Gibbons in the 200 IM (2:29.99) and the 100 breaststroke (1:13.01); and Iron Mountain sophomore Bryce Johnson dominated the 100 fly (1:04.97) and 100 backstroke (1:03.45).

Junior Ella McLean, already a U.P. qualifier, won again in the 100 breaststroke, swimming 1:20.47.

Junior Jocelyn Lindbeck notched her first high school victory with a 2:40.51 in the 200 free, and freshman Michael Covitz also won his first ever race with another significant time drop in the 500 free (7:21.11).

“He took 12 seconds off,” Lindstrom said of Covitz. “Every time he swims this, he has been taking off 10 to 12 seconds.”

Marisa Pipp had the best meet of her career taking off 10 seconds in the 100 fly, finishing third in 1:47.69, and followed with a great swim in the 400 free relay.

“She has been working extra hard lately and it is really starting to show,” Lindstrom said. “The girls just outnumbered them along with some great swims. Ishpeming/Negaunee has some good numbers but most of them are new swimmers, and it will take time to develop them. They are definitely on the right track.”

Kingsford’s girls won all three relays in the meet, with boys victorious in the 200 medley and 400 freestyle.
