Kingsford swimmers top Gladstone, Manistique
MANISTIQUE — The Kingsford varsity swim team swept a three-team meet at Manistique on Tuesday afternoon, with the girls totaling 146 points to top Gladstone (94) and Manistique (58) and the boys scoring 111 points to edge the Braves (104) and Emeralds (74).
“The girls and boys team did well,” Flivvers head coach Jim Lindstrom said. “Manistique’s pool is too shallow for starting blocks and we don’t practice in-water starts because we only go there once a year. But we still had a few new qualifying swims.”
Sophomore Allison Deuter earned two more U.P. Finals qualifications, hitting the standard with wins in the 200 IM (2:32.06) and 100 freestyle (1:06.83). Juniors Kailey Matuszewski (1:14.08) and Olivia Sage (1:19.44) both qualified in the 100 backstroke, fishing second and third behind Gladstone’s Irene Neumeier (1:11.07).
Other wins for the Kingsford girls included sophomore Aubrey Peterson in the 500 free (6:31.94) and junior Ella McLean in the 100 breaststroke (1:23.71). Both swimmers are already U.P. qualified in those events.
The boys team, despite swimming with two less swimmers than the other two teams, had a strong outing.
“The boys swam incredibly well,” Lindstrom said. “Bryce Johnson had the closest race of the day coming back to win the 100 fly by .29 seconds, and Michael Covitz dropped 10 seconds in the 500 free. The whole team did better than I expected.”
Johnson, an Iron Mountain sophomore, previously qualified in the 100 fly and posted a 1:06.38 in his win Tuesday. He also took the 100 backstroke, posting a comfortable 12 second victory in 1:03.12.
Covitz was second in the 500 free (7:33.13), just three seconds behind winner Sawyer Potes of Gladstone. Other winners for the boys included senior Sam Lamirand in the 200 free (2:19.13), senior Quinten Smith in the 50 free (26.66), and junior Thomas Gibbons in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.66). Lamirand, Smith and Gibbons had all previously qualified for the U.P. Finals in those events.
Kingsford girls collected relay wins in the 200 medley (Matuszewski, McLean, Deuter, Peterson) and 400 free (Gianna Novara, Marley Dixon, Peterson, Deuter). The boys 200 medley (Johnson, Gibbons, David Arcand, Smith) and 400 free (Smith, Johnson, Gibbons, Lamirand) were also first.
