Knights break free from Nordics
The Norway Knights outscored North Dickinson by 20 points in the middle quarters to break open a tight girls basketball game and post a 62-28 victory over the Nordics on opening night for both teams Monday.
Senior guard Lauren Adams scored 12 of her game-high 24 points over the second and third quarters when the Knights outscored the visiting Nordics 29-9.
“Happy with the way the girls played for the first game,” Norway coach Brian Adams said. “I thought the energy was there. There are things to clean up and we will, but all in all for game one I’m very pleased with them.”
Norway grabbed a 16-11 edge after the opening eight minutes, aided by two 3-pointers from Peyton Carlson and three hoops from Adams.
But North Dickinson kept up with the Knights, getting two 3-pointers from Raina Ledzian, another from Aunika Lindholm and a bucket from Dalaney Steinbrecher.
However, the Nordics went dry offensively beginning in the second quarter when they scored just four points to fall behind 28-15 at the break.
ND managed only five points in the third as the Knights ran out to a 45-20 advantage.
Coach Adams said that the two Carlsons on his team provided sparks on both ends.
“Ashley Carlson’s defense was outstanding,” Adams began. “Peyton Carlson played like the girl we saw in the regional final last year. She’ s no doubt a first-team all-conference talent when she plays with that mentality on offense.”
Peyton Carlson and Jenna Rossler both finished with 13 points, helping to provide the all-important scoring balance to go with the usual output from 2024-25 all-U.P. dream-teamer Adams.
“When we get two other girls in double figures to go along with what Lauren does, we become a more dangerous team,” coach Adams said. “Hopefully tonight is a sign of what’s to come.”
Ledzian and Ava Oman paced the Nordics with eight points each.
The Knights are off until Monday when they travel to Bark River-Harris. The Nordics are back in action on Thursday when they host Florence.
