Nordics undone by foul shooting in OT defeat

FELCH TOWNSHIP – The North Dickinson Nordics grabbed an 11-point lead over Stephenson after one quarter but shot just 13 of 28 from the free throw line and fell to the Eagles 58-52 in overtime in a Skyline Central Conference matchup Tuesday at Carl F. Lemin Gymnasium

Brady Jungwirth scored five points, Mason Florenski and Trenton Kramer added four each and Ty King chipped in with a bucket as the Nordics (2-1) built a 15-4 advantage after the first quarter.

Stephenson (5-0) started to chip away in the second period, pulling to within 24-17 at halftime. The Eagles crept to within 38-32 after three and then outscored the Nordics 17-14 to knot the game at 49-all heading into overtime.

There, Stephenson sank 5 of 6 free throws in the extra session and outscored ND 9-3 to complete the comeback.

Nathan Klein knocked down seven 3-pointers and scored 25 points to lead the Eagles.

For the Nordics, Kramer finished with 16 points and nine rebounds, Jungwirth contributed 15 points and five assists and King recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

ND shot 18 of 48 from the field (39 percent) and committed 24 turnovers with 10 assists.

The Nordics travel to Gwinn (0-4) on Friday.

Kingsford led 52-13 at halftime at Iron River on Tuesday. The half was highlighted by a Matt Sundquist breakaway dunk and Jett Buckley hitting a half-court shot as the second quarter expired.

Buckley led the Flivvers with 19 points.

“We wanted to share the ball, turn our defense into offense and get shots out of our (offensive) system,” said Kingsford coach Ben Olsen. “All things I feel we accomplished,” he said.

Kingsford recorded 17 steals and had 29 points in transition.

Sundquist added nine points and Jack Kriegl had eight points, nine assists and five steals. Blake Tomasoski contributed seven points.

Seth Oberlin led the Wykons (0-5) with 14 points.

The Flivvers (5-1) travel to Marquette for a Great Northern Conference game Friday.
