Pineda, Knights sink Mountaineers

NORWAY – Anthony Pineda scored 15 of his game-high 24 points in the first quarter and Norway held off a fourth-quarter surge by Iron Mountain to earn its first victory of the year, a 48-45 decision over the Mountaineers on Friday at Norway High School.

Pineda drilled three of his four 3-pointers in the opening period to spark Norway (1-2) to a 17-5 lead. Iron Mountain began to chip into the lead in the second quarter, outscoring the Knights 11-7 to head into halftime down 24-16.

Norway pushed its advantage to 33-23 after three before the Mountaineers, behind four triples by Brayden Kassin, fought back to make the game tight at the end.

Kassin led IM (2-3) with 22 points, while Max White and Lane Wender added six each.

Owen Baij joined Pineda in double figures for the Knights with 11.

Iron Mountain was scheduled to travel to Ishpeming Monday for a West Pac East/Mid-Peninsula Conference matchup with the Hematites (2-1).

Norway was slated to host Niagara on Monday.
