Wood leads IM over Jets in opener
Iron Mountain junior Alysia Wood scored a game-high 22 points to lead the Mountaineers to a 41-32 victory over host North Central in a non-conference contest Monday.
Wood, the top returning player from last season’s Mountaineers team, got this year’s squad off to a fine start with two 3-pointers and another hoop in the opening quarter as IM grabbed a 11-5 lead heading into the second.
Wood then added another triple, a bucket and two free throws to help the Mountaineers maintain their six-point advantage at the break.
Iron Mountain stretched its 23-17 halftime edge to 33-22 after three quarters with Wood sinking her final 3-pointer of the game along with a 2-point bucket.
Sophomore point guard Olivia Geneva helped the Mountaineers stay in front by shooting 4 of 4 in the final quarter.
Geneva finished the game with 10 points while Geraldine Sampoll Torres knocked down a hoop in every quarter for eight points and freshman Khloe Jayne added a free throw.
Dalyn Otradovec scored 12 points and Addy Otradovec finished with 10 to lead the Jets. Autumn Triest wound up with eight and Natalie Willa contributed two.
The Mountaineers were slated to face West Iron County in a West Pac Conference game on Tuesday, while Jets were scheduled to travel to Stephenson for a Skyline Central Conference clash on Tuesday as well.
