Wykons bury IM under flurry of 3s
IRON RIVER – West Iron began the 2025-26 girls basketball season with a bang, sinking 10 3-point shots on their way to a 49-20 triumph over Iron Mountain on Tuesday at Charles Greenlund Gymnasium.
Lacey Shamion and Bristol Shamion buried three triples each to go with two each from Lily DeSousa and Cami Alexa against the Mountaineers’ 2-3 zone.
“It’s been many years since West Iron has had that many 3-pointers,” WIC Eric Shamion said. “I thought in the half-court set, we were patient, we worked the ball around the perimeter and I thought when we did take our outside shots, they were calculated.”
After Iron Mountain sophomore Monroe Vedin started the game with a pair of buckets, Bristol Shamion got WIC’s outside game going with a 3-pointer from the corner.
Sophomore post Eriana Sucholl added a putback and a free throw to give her team a 6-5 lead heading into the second.
Which is when the Wykons (1-0) separated themselves from the Mountaineers (1-1). Bristol Shamion started the second stanza with a triple off an assist from senior sister Lacy, who then buried two 3s of her own late in the half as WIC went on a 14-0 run to head into halftime with a 20-9 advantage.
Meanwhile, the Wykons held IM’s top scorer Alysia Wood to just one point in the opening 16 minutes and only four in the game. Bristol Shamion did the bulk of that. Wood had opened the season with 22 points in Monday’s victory over North Central.
“Bristol has some size to her and some length, so she creates problems for other guards,” her father and coach said. “I thought she did a really nice job tonight against Wood.”
The Mountaineers’ offensive struggles continued in the third quarter when they managed just two points, a bucket by Gerald Sampoll Torres. It was IM’s only points during a 12-minute span.
On the other side, West Iron continued to make hay on the perimeter as the Alexa knocked down a triple to go with one each from the Shamion sisters.
Senior post Laurel Johnson knocked down a layup off an assist from Alexa and sophomore center Sucholl scored off a rebound to help lift the Wykons to an insurmountable 35-11 edge heading into the fourth.
The difference in size, strength and quickness between the two squads was apparent as West Iron played with six upperclassmen and Iron Mountain fielded a starting lineup with two sophomores and a freshman.
“We’ve got two bigs, Sucholl and Johnson, they’re strong, they both can jump, they go after the ball pretty aggressively,” Eric Shamion said. “But then we have some other kids, like Cami and Lily and Kyla (Erickson), these kids go after the ball and that’s exactly what you need when you only have eight kids on the team.”
The Wykons finished with balanced scoring, led by DeSousa with 11. Bristol Shamion ended up with 10, Lacey Shamion scored nine, Alexa finished with eight, Sucholl scored seven and Johnson contributed four.
Geneva topped the Mountaineers with seven points.
Iron Mountain will look to get back in the win column tonight with a home matchup with Gladstone (1-0). West Iron travels to Houghton (0-1) on Friday.
