YMCA swimmers pile up wins at Marinette

MARINETTE, Wis. — Northern Lights YMCA Swim Team delivered a strong mid-season showing at Saturday’s Winterfest meet in Marinette, Wis., posting numerous top finishes and significant time improvements across all age groups.

Coached by Aimee Tatangelo, the team’s depth was on full display as athletes combined for multiple event wins, personal-best performances, and standout swims in both sprint and distance events.

Several swimmers claimed first-place finishes or landed among the top competitors in their divisions:

— Ella Murphy (11-12) dominated with four event victories, winning the 100 Back, 100 Free, 50 Fly, and 50 Free, while also dropping substantial time in the backstroke.

— Greyson Williams (9-10) earned multiple first places, including wins in the 50 Breast, 50 Fly, and 50 Free, along with a strong runner-up finish in the 100 Free.

— Sierra Tatangelo (11-12) added an outstanding win in the 500 Free.

— Dominic Tatangelo (13-14) powered to wins in the 100 Fly and 400 IM, and placed top-three in the 100 Back, 100 Free, and 50 Free. — Tucker Williams (15 & Over) swept his age group with victories in the 50 Free and 100 Free, along with strong runner-up finishes in breaststroke and backstroke.

— Cira Windell (13-14) captured the 100 Breast title and added top-three finishes in the 100 Free, 200 IM, and 50 Free.

Additional top-five performances came from Katarina Blair, Felicity and Anastasia DeGroot, Ayla Harrand, Annabelle Fayas, Annika and Miriam Gustafson, Archer and Forest Koprowski, Catherine Majors, Claire DeRidder, James Carlson, and Sawyer Williams.

Swimmers across the roster showed exceptional progress, with some dropping double-digit seconds from previous bests:

— Ayla Harrand (7-8) recorded significant drops in her 25 Free and 50 Back.

— Mackenzie Kowalczyk (7-8) saw major improvements, including more than 11 seconds in the 50 Back, along with a first-place finish in the 25 Breast.

— Anabelle Fayas (9-10) cut time in both the freestyle and backstroke.

— Claire DeRidder (9-10) dropped 8.07 seconds in the 100 Back and added improvements across multiple events.

— Annika Gustafson (11-12) cut more than 2 seconds in the 100 IM, showing strong versatility/

— Miriam Gustafson (9-10) dropped 22.71 seconds in the 500 Free.

— Sierra Tatangelo (11-12) posted one of the meet’s biggest improvements, cutting 55.87 seconds in her 500 Free victory and adding drops in other events.

— Dominic Tatangelo (13-14) made a massive 44.96-second improvement in the 400 IM, along with gains in sprint events.

— Aubrey Dixon (13-14) had one of her best meets with time improvements and powerful swims across the board.

Coach Tatangelo praised the team’s collective effort throughout the meet. “Our swimmers came ready to race,” she said. “The number of time drops we saw shows how hard these kids are working. We had strong leaders in the pool today, and we also had huge breakthroughs from our younger swimmers. I’m incredibly proud of every athlete who competed.”

The team will travel to Sturgeon Bay, Wis., this weekend.
