Flivvers deliver at Gremlin Splash

HOUGHTON – Talent runs deep on the Kingsford varsity swim roster this season, and when it comes to the breaststroke there is nobody better in the Upper Peninsula right now than juniors Ella McLean and Thomas Gibbons. The standout duo set the pace and helped the Flivvers to a strong showing at the Gremlin Splash, a medal meet held Saturday at Houghton High School.

Scheduled as a five-team event, a couple of late cancellations left just Houghton, Kingsford and Gladstone as the competing teams. The Flivvers, in action for just the second time since the holiday break, shook off some of the rust that emerged in their first meet back after break.

“This meet was much better than the last,” Flivvers head coach Jim Lindstrom said. “This meet gives the kids some different events that are normally not part of the high school meets. Their times were in the normal range for this time of year, not like last meet where they were off. Overall I was pleased with their performance.”

McLean and Gibbons continued their absolute domination in the breaststroke. Both undefeated this season with no other swimmers even close to challenging them, McLean took the girls 50 in 34.84 and the 200 in 2:54.64, winning both by a full six seconds. Gibbons won the same on the boys side with times of 30.96 and 2:37.09, respectively, which was a four-second cushion in the 50 and a seven-second margin in the 200.

Iron Mountain sophomore Bryce Johnson also registered double individual wins for Kingsford. Johnson gave nobody a chance against him in the 200 fly (2:20.14) and the 200 back (2:19.52), winning both events comfortably as has been the case all season.

Kingsford senior Sam Lamirand swims the 100 free at Saturday’s Gremlin Splash. Lamirand took second in that race (55.60) and later won the 50 fly with a time of 28.46.

Sophomore Allison Deuter also was fastest in multiple events, but she technically scored just one individual win. She was victorious in the 100 IM with a time of 1:11.78 and took second in the 200 fly with a 2:37.42, a race she was trying for the first time. She also was the quickest girls swimmer in the 50 fly (29.27) and 50 free (26.71) but she added those events just for time after using the 100 IM and 200 fly as her medal events in the meet with swimmers limited to two individual entries for scores. Extra lanes were available in several events after the late cancellations ahead of the meet, allowing swimmers to pick up extra races.

Other individual winners for the Flivvers Saturday included senior Sam Lamirand in the 50 fly (28.46), junior Olivia Sage in the 50 back (36.76), and sophomore Aubree Peterson in the 200 free (2:18.88). Lamirand also added a second in the 100 free (55.60), and Peterson was second in the 50 free (29.15).

Freshman Michael Covitz earned the team’s most improved for the meet with his third in the 50 free, dropping three seconds off his time.

The Flivver girls also tallied relay wins in the 200 medley and 200 free. Sophomore Gianna Novara, McLean, Deuter and Peterson took the 200 medley in 2:08.47, and it was the same group winning the 200 free in 1:56.28.

Kingsford’s boys secured a relay victory in the 200 medley in 1:54.34, Johnson, Gibbons, senior David Arcand and Lamirand swimming that one.

Kingsford is back in action this afternoon, hosting a meet at the Northern Lights YMCA Dickinson Center.

Starting at $3.50/week.
