RHINELANDER, Wis. – A pair of convincing non-conference victories over Medford and Rhinelander this week has the Kingsford varsity hockey team riding a wave of momentum into a key showdown at Escanaba tonight.
The Flivvers (8-4-0) downed Medford 4-1 on Tuesday before smacking Rhinelander 6-1 Wednesday afternoon, both games being played at the Rhinelander Ice Arena. The two wins follow the Flivvers shocking defeat of Marquette 2-1 right before Christmas, as Kingsford now rides a season-best five game win streak as they look to pull off another upset when they face the state-ranked Eskymos – a squad that took a 7-0 victory over the Flivvers back in the second game of the season in November.
“We need to run our systems, because if we don’t do that against Eksky, it’s going to be over quick,” Flivvers head coach Greg Wadge said. “We have to keep it tight. We have to go wide with speed. We have to get in behind their defense. We need to make sure we have four guys on the right side of the puck in our zone. We’ll see what happens.”
Despite the lopsided wins this week, Wadge felt his team strayed from the level of play they showed in the upset over Marquette. Perhaps playing down to the level of competition a little bit, the Flivvers know they’ll have to be better against Escanaba.
Against Medford (1-6-0) the Flivvers commanded a 49-9 advantage in shots. They outshot Rhinelander 20-10, with the home team not even allowed a shot on goal until the final minutes of the first period.

The Flivvers led 4-0 against Medford, with the Raiders finally cracking the scoreboard in the final minutes of the contest. Sophomore Casey Clisch scored twice in the win, the team’s leading scorer adding another pair of goals in the win over Rhinelander for a dozen goals on the season.
Senior Jake Deuter scored his sixth of the season for a 2-0 lead against Medford, with junior Jonah Doenier adding his third of the year for the Flivvers’ final tally. Doenier also had an assist, with other assists coming from senior Will Murvich, junior Jack Spreen (2), freshman Colin Olsen and junior Seth Greenleaf.
Sophomore Alex Hemgren collected the win in net with eight saves.
Against Rhinelander (0-9-0) the Flivvers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first thanks to goals by Spreen, Clisch and sophomore Paolo Lenzi. Spreen’s goal was his fifth of the season, with Lenzi up to seven. Murvich scored both second period goals for the Flivvers, giving him 10 for the season with his second answering the Hodags’ lone tally to make it a 5-1 contest heading into the third. Clisch broke free for a shorthanded score early in the third for the Flivvers’ final goal.
Doenier and Greenleaf added assists on the Spreen goal. Deuter assisted on Clisch’s first goal, and Spreen helped on Lenzi’s tally. Sophomore Carter Steber collected his second assist of the season on Murvich’s second goal.
Senior Nate Scullon earned the win against Rhinelander, stopping all eight shots fired his way in the third period as the Hodags mounted a little more pressure.
Tonight’s contest at Escanaba is scheduled for a 7 p.m. Eastern time start.
